Smiles at 7: Children Should Have an Orthodontic Evaluation by Age 7
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive their first
orthodontic evaluation by age 7, also known as an orthodontic checkup. At this
stage, children typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, allowing Dr. Eltink to identify developing
issues with jaw growth, bite alignment, and tooth eruption early, while there is still time to guide
development if needed.
An early visit does not usually mean early treatment. Most children we see at age 7 simply receive a clean
bill of health and a plan to monitor growth over time. But for the smaller number of children who do benefit
from early intervention, catching it at age 7 can make a meaningful difference and sometimes simplify
treatment significantly later on.
If your child is not yet ready for, or simply does not need, Phase 1 treatment,
we will continue to monitor their development at no charge through our
Observation Monitoring Program. At Buffalo Grove Orthodontics, we only recommend
treatment when it is truly needed.

By age 12, most children have their full set of permanent teeth, and many orthodontic concerns become more
